Our pets love their Hilife - we hope yours do to!

Lets not cause a stink!

We love our dogs, we really do, but let’s face it – sometimes they can get a bit wiffy, bad news! The good news is there is a lot you can do to prevent this from getting out of hand.

Here are a few tips to get your dog smelling as fresh as a daisy:

Sounds obvious but a good bath is great for keeping your dog clean (who’d have thought it?) but don’t do it too often as this can remove too much skin oil, which could lead to health problems. The best shampoos are the ones formulated to tackle odours as opposed to simply buying a scented one. A conditioner is also great but make sure that your dog’s coat is right for conditioner – some dogs don’t need it.

Medicated shampoos are available at your local vet if your dog has a skin condition. When bathing your dog make sure that they are wet through with warm water before applying any products and start at the top of the head and through to the tail. After washing them off its time for them to shake rattle and roll – make sure you stand well back, and then dry them off. If you are really busy you can take the load off by taking your dog to a professional dog washer.

We touched on grooming in a previous blog, but this is vital for keeping your pooch clean and healthy. Simple grooming tips such as cleaning your pooches ears, brushing them daily to remove dirt and cleaning your dog’s teeth are all great to do regularly.  If you’re doggy has smelly breath, why not take a look at our blog on the importance of doggy dental hygiene and how to deal with it.

Throw caution to the wind

Some dogs have a tendency to get a bit breezy, here’s a few ways to lose some of the hot air:

Think about what your dog is eating, bad smelling food can, more often than not, make your dog smell. Make sure the dogfoods don’t have any unhealthy additives, which cause digestion problems and be aware of what foods give your dogs digestive problems and keep them from noseying around the rubbish bin. Take a look at some of our delicious and healthy dogfoods here.

Get moving

Make sure your dog has lots of regular exercise, a great way to lose some of that flatulence and encourage gut movement. It also prevents your dog from becoming bored.

Cleaning your dog’s bedding

You know that feeling when you get into bed and you’ve just washed your sheets? It’s great isn’t it? So does your dog. Make sure that you always keep their bedding clean and free of dirt and fleas. If you have to use detergent, try using the non-scented kind and if you are hand washing, hot water with baking soda or vinegar works well (try and avoid fabric softener) and make sure they are dry before your dog snuggles down.
